Top 4 Ways Businesses and Local Governments Can Coordinate on Green Initiatives

There are several important environmental issues affecting us, from climate change to endangered wildlife. The public perception seems to be that big business is the major problem, dumping pollutants and destroying forests for profit. Yet, businesses are often struggling to meet the demands of a growing consumer market. Your business can operate as a "green" company by partnering with local governments in several ways.

Recycling Opportunities

Consumers are looking for more eco-friendly products as environmental concerns increase. Shoppers are checking labels for recycled materials. Companies can help themselves, consumers, the community, and the environment by launching or supporting recycling initiatives through the local government, such as cardboard and paper collections. Buying raw goods from local recyclers is also a good way to increase a sense of community.

Public Relations

Being branded as a green company is a great way to connect with consumers. This branding depends upon attaining a good relationship with local government over the long term. To this end, you might want to connect with government officials who have completed an in-person or online public admin master's degree. These officials will know the best ways that companies can pitch in on local green initiatives, and how they can refine their processes to include sustainable practices based on renewable energies and recyclable materials.

Children's Health

One way to gain public empathy is for companies to sponsor health and environmental awareness training with local schools. Approach your local school board and public officials with plans for implementing such programs. For the relatively low cost of the occasional presentation on solar energy or vanishing forests, or even passing out free gifts such as book bags with both your company logo and green slogans, you gain the goodwill of the local community while cementing your own brand as a community leader on green issues.

Green Promotion

Promote your green brand by encouraging employees to volunteer for environmental fundraisers, or community cleanup and renovation projects. Offer small incentives. You could also explore the idea of earning green certifications you can use on company marketing materials. Green logos may include seals from the USDA, ENERGY STAR, Green Seal, and more. Look for local offices of these organizations.

Companies that fail to connect with consumers on an emotional level may not be able to build sustainable relationships. Environmental concerns are one of the foremost issues today that businesses can have an impact with. It will benefit you in the long-term to take part in your local government's environmental projects.
